2013 Parks and Recreation Commission Presentation

Government CenterFriends of Mianus River Park President, David Roberts, recently made a presentation to the City of Stamford's Parks and Recreation Commission. This was the second annual presentation by the Friends' group to the Commission and followed a successful tour last summer of Mianus River Park by members of the Friends Board and many of the Commissioners.

David was able to report to the Commissioners that the Friends group has continued to grow through increased membership, and through improved communications with the over 550 people on the Friends' email list, together with a newly redesigned web-site.

During 2012 the Friends Group raised over $6,000 in membership fees and donations and was awarded it first major grant of $3,000, which was from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund, with the funds to be available in 2013. Details of the grant >

In addition to the funds spent on trail improvements and plantings in the park during 2012, over 700 hours of volunteer work were contributed, with over 50 different volunteers working on trail improvements and plantings.

A second hardened access to the river was opened in 2012 to prevent riverbank erosion and two Eagle Scout projects were completed in the park.

The Friends group has provided input to recent studies affecting the long term future of the park and continues to work closely with other organizations. The Friends group has, for example, been discussing with Greenwich Audubon the creation of an Urban Oasis in the park to nurture migrating birds, a project which was approved by the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Most projects carried out by the Friends group so far have been within the Stamford section of the park because the area along the Mianus River is the most used, all projects are approved by the City of Stamford, and a close relationship with the Parks and Recreation Commission is invaluable.
