Our History

A series of public meetings was held between 2004 and 2006, facilitated by the National Park Service, and organized by the City of Stamford. The purpose of these meetings was to address a significant deterioration of the Mianus River Park due to increasing usage.

With public input, one of the results of these meetings was the creation of a Mianus River Park Action Plan. To view this Plan and its associated Appendices, click on the attachments below.

Another outcome of these meetings was the formation of Friends of Mianus River Park. Eight park users who had attended the public meetings, held an organizing meeting on Feb 28th, 2006. Our goals were generally to be stewards for the Park, to act as liaison with Greenwich and Stamford, and to represent the diverse user groups.

In early 2010 a formal Board of Directors was constituted and in February 2011, the Friends received tax-exempt status from the IRS so contributors may fully deduct contributions. In January 2012 the Friends held their first Annual Meeting and produced their first Annual Report.
